WCVB NewsCenter 5 Expanding to Three Hours of Weeknight Evening News

From 4:30-7:30PM on January 11, 2016,

Introducing the Boston Market’s Only 7:00PM News Broadcast,

Followed by Boston’s Only News Magazine “Chronicle”

BOSTON, MA – October 23, 2015 – WCVB NewsCenter 5, Boston’s News Leader, will launch two, new half-hour weeknight newscasts at 4:30PM and 7:00PM beginning on Monday, January 11, 2016.  The expansion will allow WCVB’s award-winning NewsCenter 5 team to deliver more news and information programming at times that are most convenient for many of the market’s busy viewers.

“WCVB is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to improve how we deliver news to our viewers, via all of our platforms – on air, web, and mobile – which includes the WCVB news app, and social media.” said Bill Fine, WCVB President and General Manager. “The evening news expansion addresses an expressed need of Boston’s viewers by providing additional options to receive NewsCenter 5 at new times.”

“With the addition of these two newscasts, as well as the recently announced news expansion Sundays at 5:00PM, WCVB is better positioned to provide the news our viewers want at the times they want it,” said Andrew Vrees, WCVB News Director. “WCVB will provide a powerhouse block of news and information to our community including local news, the #1-rated national news, and the locally produced, award-winning ‘Chronicle’.”

“WCVB will be the only Boston television station with news at 7:00PM, and a perfect companion program for market favorite ‘Chronicle’ at 7:30PM,” continued Fine. “Independent research showed that nearly half of the viewers that are available to watch TV at 7:00PM, would be extremely or very interested in a local newscast at that time.”

The news expansion at 4:30PM and 7:00PM will change WCVB’s current program schedule as follows. Effective January 11, Ellen will move to 3:00PM (from 4:00PM), Inside Edition will move to 4:00PM (from 7:00PM), and Meredith will move to 1:05AM (from 3:00PM).
